The Industrial Revolution saw Britain transformed from an agricultural nation to a manufacturing powerhouse. The railways played a major role in this, allowing fast communications from places of production to ports and markets. The first steam locomotive was built by Cornishman Richard Trevithick (1771–1833). In 1801 his Puffing Devil transported several people along a roadway in Cornwall. Three years later another of his locomotives – this time travelling on a smooth ‘rail ’– carried heavy goods from an ironworks in Wales. However, the turning point came in 1825, when Northumberland engineer George Stephenson (1781–1848) drove his steam Locomotion on the new Stockton to Darlington railway, hauling both coal and passengers – and reaching a speed of 24mph (39kmh). The age of the train had arrived.
